Cracking Down on Gas Waste: EPA Proposes Charge for Major Methane Emitters
The roar of the oil and gas industry is about to get a little quieter. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has unveiled a plan to tackle harmful methane emissions in the sector, targeting major polluters with a potential "waste charge." This proposed rule comes on the heels of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and is a two-pronged approach to protecting our air from invisible air pollution.
EPA Tackles Methane Emissions from Oil and Gas Industry in Proposed Rule
The Environmental Protection Agency is cracking down on methane emissions in the oil and gas industry in a newly proposed rule that would assess a charge on certain large emitters of waste methane.
The proposed rule would work in tandem with the funding in the IRA and consider the emissions intensity levels set by Congress.
The EPA finalized a rule for oil and gas in December 2023 to control methane emissions in both new and existing operations.
