Qatar Plans to Buy Rosneft's German Oil Companies with Rothschild's Help
Qatar's wealth fund wants to buy two German oil companies that used to belong to Russian oil giant Rosneft. They've hired Rothschild bank to help them make the deal happen.
These companies might be worth between €3-5 billion ($3.2-5.4 billion). Germany took control of them in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, and now they want to sell them. Qatar is the only buyer interested because other Western companies can't buy them due to Russia sanctions.
Qatar is working hard to make this deal work. They've been meeting with German officials in Berlin, and Germany wants to finish the sale by the end of this year. Before finalizing anything, Qatar plans to check with the US government to keep good relations with them.
This deal makes sense for Qatar because they already own some Rosneft shares and have good relationships with both Russia and German companies. If they buy these companies, they'll get ownership in three German oil refineries and an important oil pipeline.
There's just one tricky part: one of the refineries near Berlin can't get Russian oil anymore and isn't running at full speed. It now has to get oil from other places like Kazakhstan.
The German government says recent political changes won't affect this sale, and they're letting Rosneft handle the selling process.
